Position Quick Curve Ruler (QCR) on 5.5" squares.  Curved cut out should be about 1/2 inch from opposite diagonal corners.  Fabric above ruler centers between the 3 3/4 and 8 1/4.  The bottom left corner sits under the 6" and 5 1/2" intersection.  Make your cut.  Repeat for all 5.5" squares.
Alternately layout blocks as shown above.  Use the set shown on the top.  Save the others for use in another block.
Position background on focus fabric as shown above.  Begin sewing curved edges bringing them together as you sew.  You will not need to pin.  Sew all (8) blocks.

Press blocks.  Press seam open on back and then press on the front.

Use QCR to square up Curved HST to 4.5" x 4.5".

Position light fabric for regular HST on top of dark HST fabric.
Draw a line from one diagonal corner to the opposite corner.  Sew a 1/4" seam on each side of line.  Cut on drawn line and press blocks open. Blocks should measure 4.5" square.
Layout center checkerboard squares as shown.  Sew squares to form rows.  Sew rows together. Press.  Center should measure 8.5 x 8.5.
