I felt a little bit like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this past week.

First for my Dr. Jekyll experience: I finished piecing and quilting up my small version of Urban Tiles. Jenny had asked me to write up the pattern for Urban Tiles, so first I pieced four Urban Tile blocks. Jenny's was really scrappy so I made mine very uniform to give it a different look. I like how it turned out and it feels very tame compared to her original version. This look is safe, pleasant, controlled, etc. Very Dr. Jekyll...

Now for Mr. Hyde: I decided I was going to piece and quilt a version of Urban Candy. I love the line "Mod Century" from Jenny Ski of Moda Fabrics and new it would work great for this pattern. Jenny (my Jenny not Jenny Ski) and I thought it would be fun to reverse the background and prints from the original pattern. I bought the layer cake and 1/3 yard of yardage for all the background pieces and Kona gray for the the solid curves. I was a wild quilty lady on Friday: I bought the fabric, cut the pieces, and sewed up the entire quilt in 1 day. Very MR. HYDE... Yesterday I quilted the vertical lines to give it a little peace and sewed on the binding for a break from the scrappy background. My 17 year old son said it looked like a quilt on Steroids! I really LOVE how it turned out and I have sat and looked at it now for about an hour just mesmerized by the randomness of the background fabric and the beauty of the gray curves. Working with the "Mod Century" line was just as exciting as the fabric is...

I have been quilting for over 15 years and as time goes by my quilting likes and dislikes have changed. We all change...we change how we cut out fabric, we change how we do binding, we change which blocks we like to make, and we even change the kind of fabric we are inspired by and purchase.

For years I bought and sewed with traditional fabrics. And I have a lot of it still floating around my sewing room. When Jenny and I decided to do the "Curve It Up" QAL with traditional blocks we each wanted to use different fabrics to show the blocks with alternate color ways and fabric choices. Jenny knew right away she was going to use the orange, turquoise fabrics she had. I couldn't decide, so I procrastinated until the first block was going to be posted in a couple of days, and I hurried and made it out of traditional fabric I had and I thought I would feel great about using up some of my stash.

Well.....after four blocks I'm done! I am not even inspired by my own blocks!!! It is my turn tomorrow to do block #4 and I was dreading using the traditional stuff. I made my block yesterday and did a draft of my post and was depressed about it again.

So here they are in all their muted safe boring glory! And now they're gone.....

The new me for the Curve It Up QAL series will now look like this! I am challenging myself to use just one print and multiple solids for each block. It will stretch my imagination a bit.
I demo'd the ruler at the Rusty Barn Craft Show in Phoenix in November at the Mulqueen's booth, and I will demo again with Mulqueens in January at the BIG Rusty Barn Craft show in Phoenix and at the Arizona Quilters Guild Quilt Show in March at the Mesa Convention Center.

Mulqueens is this crazy busy hive of activity. They sell and repair vacumes and sewing machines, irons, notions, rulers, patterns, long-arm supplies, fabric and 225 bolts of KONA SOLIDS. ( yes, they have every color) My Gammil Long-Arm was all out of sorts last June, and I took it in and they fixed it in a day and had me back to sewing so quick I didn't even get a break. I sat by Pam and Ginger in the Houston Airport after Quilt Market and we were chatting about quilty things and Ginger said I know you. You come into Mulqueens and buy long-arm thread and needles and then it dawned on me how I knew them. Anyway, after chatting a bit about Quilt Market, the Quick Curve Ruler and the QCR patterns they said Mulqueens would probably want to carry them in their store where they both worked. So that is how simply this whole thing started and today I am taking in three shop samples.

I made Urban Chained, Urban Abacus and Deco Shimmer for their shop. They gave me the fabric and I used it at the Rusty Barn Show a few weeks ago as my demo samples which worked great because after three days I had all my blocks cut and pieced and I just had to square-up and assemble the rest of the quilt tops together. They are getting a flimsy of Urban Chained and Abacus, but I decided yesterday that I should quilt up Deco Shimmer since it is in Christmas fabrics and it should be displayed before this holiday season is over. I quilted an all-over holly vine and used my favorite holiday red striped fabric for binding.
Using the Quick Curve Ruler to recreate traditional quilt patterns and new designs is tons of fun! After Jenny and I worked on the Double Wedding Ring this weekend, I had to do the Solo Circle. I could see it in my head and I couldn't leave it alone until I had it in fabric. I am not sure what to call it........ Ozone? Solo Circle? The One Ring to Rule them All? Lol.......Ocredible? The options are endless.
I think it would make great modern pillows for my girls for Christmas.... They are out of the country for the next week so I'm hoping they don't see this post....
I designed this quilt about 6 weeks ago. I had an idea in my head that wouldn't go away, so one night I stayed up way too late getting this design down on paper. The white shapes represent the glass ornaments that we decorate our Christmas tree with each year. They especially remind me of vintage glass ornaments that covered Granny's tree every year.
This quilt is 60x70. This quilt uses the Quick Curve Ruler to cut the curved pieces and square up the blocks. It is designed to be a holiday throw quilt that gives a great splash of color and festivity to any room. I quilted it on my Gammill longarm with a medium density so it wouldn't be too stiff. The pattern is available and can be purchased here.

This pattern is great for using all those wonderful big print floral fabrics that are so easy to fall in love with. I used a great Amy Butler purple dot for the background fabric. The quilting highlights the floral fabrics with a modern feather and my favorite background back-and-forth filler.

I designed this quilt to have that very chic bohemian feel which goes great with many interior design elements. This pattern also has a bonus table runner!

It is available on paper and as a pdf pattern. Don't forget to buy your QCR today for 20% of regular price. This is probably one of my favorite quilts I've ever made and quilted. I love the graphic design and simple color combination. The silver dot is a Michael Miller print that is available currently in stores. The white and the gray binding is from Moda's 'Blitzen' collection. The red is a solid from Moda. This is a 60 x 70 lap quilt, so I didn't want the quilting to be too heavy or it makes for a stiff quilt about which my children complain.

This quilt was fun to piece and even more fun to quilt. The Quick Curve Ruler makes cutting and piecing a quilt with many curves quick and easy. The time commitment to sew curves is reduced by at least 1/3 by using the QCR.

I have the pattern ready to go, but I need to get some time with my photographer, Breanne at Red Poppy Photo (btw she did an amazing job on my pattern cover photos :o)) to get the cover photo and full quilt picture taken.
It is a common graphic design that is on a lot of fabric, wallpaper, wrapping paper, upholstery fabric, etc., but I decided to turn it into a quilt pattern. I am very proud of myself for planning to use red/white/gray because red and I do not always get along (see here).

I have been working on this quilt for a couple of weeks. After
cutting and sewing the blocks I adjusted the quilt design twice to get
just the right look. Yesterday I was able to load it on my long-arm and
begin quilting it. The quilting has been a progression. I knew right
away what I wanted to do in the red, but the gray and white designs
occurred one layer at a time, never quite sure what would come next
until I finished each section of quilting.

Here are a series of pics showing this quilts evolution.

CONTRAILS??? What's that about? Well it's the name of the exhaust from a jet airplane we see in the sky that looks like thin streaks of fluffy clouds, and it's also the name of my new pattern!

The inspiration for this quilt came from living in the Texas Panhandle. You know, that little square part of Texas that juts upward by Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. We lived there for three years until moving to Arizona this past June. The Texas Panhandle is the land of BIG skies, flat wide-open spaces, constant wind, and more cattle than you can imagine! Those big skies were perfect for viewing 10 to 15 contrails at a time. Airplanes going every which way with only a very few of them stopping in Amarillo.

This quilt is made using the Quick Curve Ruler, which easily cuts the curved shapes for no-pin piecing. This has a modified "Trip Around the World" setting with HST blocks on the diagonal giving it the "Contrails" inspiration. The blue fabric is from Momo and is adorable with birds walking or flying. I was able to cut the fabric so they are all going the same direction.
Thank you so much to those that have already purchased my patterns. Your kind support has exceeded my expectations! You may have noticed my new pattern layout with the "Sew Kind of Wonderful" logo. Jenny and I are merging our businesses, and we are thrilled to have two distributors that will be carrying our QCR Patterns and the Quick Curve Ruler.

So, over the next few months HGMR Deco Quilting will be fazed out as my sister and I become one business "Sew Kind of Wonderful." Our distributors indicated it was confusing to have two separate business names related to the QCR Patterns and Quick Curve Ruler. Besides, Jenny and I have always planned on getting to this point, this just sped up the transition. We are super excited to be working together!

I love background fill on quilts. It is the background that makes all the other specialty quilting pop out and get to show off. My favorite background fill is just back and forth parallel (lol) lines. I love the texture it gives when touching the quilt and the rest spots it gives your eyes when viewing a quilt.

Here are two sneak peaks at Deco Flora with all that yummy background fill showing up!
I loaded one of my own quilts and began the quilting process. I decided to do some swirls and ribbon candy. The quilt is very directional. I can do ribbon candy when it is back and forth but not up and down, so I am taking this off and reloading it so I can finish the layers of ribbon candy.Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628018767495612691noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119613608660235057.post-90708689529276763732012-10-01T11:18:00.001-07:002012-10-01T11:22:25.268-07:00And the winners are.......Thank you to everyone for your kind words of support and comments about my quilt patterns. Today is like Christmas morning for me! So, how did I get to this moment? One day I had an epiphany that I should create patterns for all these quilts that are always floating around in my head. I realized these ideas could be more than just 'one hit wonders' if I created patterns for them.

She sent me 12 half yard cuts of a great 'Asian' line. I don't know the name of it so if anyone does please tell me. I made a great zig zag quilt with it, and afterwards I had a little of each piece left over that I stashed away for another project.

A month ago I was playing around with the Quick Curve Ruler and came up with a block that I thought would make a great quilt. I rummaged and searched for awhile until I found my bits of 'Asian' prints that I knew would work great with it. I added some Kona Cactus and a great graphic print border and Deco Zig Zag was born! I love the variety of prints, the motion from the layout and the quilting design. All the elements work well together to make it one of my favorite quilts!

This pattern is being tested and should be available within a couple of weeks. When I create a quilt, I make notes about the process and then I write up the pattern so it is always an adventure to see if the pattern makes the quilt I think it should. :-/
This quilt is called Tic Tak Deco. It uses the Quick Curve Ruler to make these great curved pieced blocks that create this great design! I used some much loved fabric from my stash and Kona's 'snow' for the white background fabric. I quilted an all-over free-hand semi-paisley design. This pattern combines the curved blocks with classic four-patch blocks to create a quilt that has different layers of design.
Today I am revealing my newest pattern, Deco Tumbler. It is made using the Quick Curve Ruler, four focus fabrics and one background fabric. I quilted two different fillers. On the solid green blocks I quilted a curved column of spirals with filler on the sides and the other blocks have a modern pebble filler which gives great texture. The pattern is currently being tested and it will be available soon.

I love this pattern! It works up fast and has great motion because the curves change direction with each row. This is a "happy" quilt. If you haven't tried the Quick Curve Ruler yet this is a great quilt to start on. Each block has only one curve and the double curve effect is achieved by how it is assembled.
I like red. I like it when other people wear it. I love it on Valentine's Day. I like red shoes. I like strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, peppers, etc. But when it comes to red fabric, I NEVER buy it. I went to three different fabric stores this week with the intention of buying red fabric each time for a red/white quilt I have designed. Did I buy red? No! I bought blue and brown. This is a change from the usual green fabric which I have banned myself from buying for a while.

Even though it is not red, this is yummy fabric, and I have great plans for it! Maybe next week I will buy red fabric......
I am working on editing my patterns and they should be done in the next two weeks. I will email you soon with details. I still have a few quilts to quilt and bind.

BTW: that is my favorite line in any pattern "Quilt and bind as desired." Like it is no big deal! It takes just as much work sometimes to get a top quilted as it does to piece it. And then binding is that thing that hangs around forever until we just say it is getting done first today before anything else happens.
Many quilters are reluctant to use solids in their piecing because quilters like the texture that printed fabrics give to the overall impression of the quilts they are creating. I confess to being a quilter that loved to always use printed fabrics. Even my neutrals that weren't the star of the quilt had a print on them. After I bought my long arm quilting machine and began quilting my tops and quilting for customers my opinion of solids has changed. I now love to use a solid or two or more in my quilts for several reasons:

1) Solids are AFFORDABLE. I can routinely buy solids for $6.95/yard. Using solids makes my quilting budget go farther. Who doesn't want to save a little $$$ so we can buy more fabric. Yeah!!!

This is my new favorite store in Mesa, Mulqueen Sewing Center. They stock EVERY Kona solid and sell them every day for $6.95. They have over 225 bolts of solids. LOVE IT!

2) Solids have a wide range of color hues to get just the right match for that odd fabric that you fell in love with but nothing else looks 'just right' with. I often fall in love with a line of fabric, but I don't buy a 1/2 yard of each print; I usually just buy a yard of the print I love the most, and then it sits in my most loved fabric stash until I find something else to go with it. Solids can help solve that problem.

3) Solids show-off quilting! Now that I long-arm sometimes I really want my quilting to stand-out. Custom quilting and all-over designs show up best on solids and gives eye candy to your quilt so that the design, piecing and quilting can all be the star of the show.

4) Solids give your eye a place to rest as it explores the over-all aesthetic beauty of your quilts. Part of what makes a design great are the contrasts of colors and textures. Solids help you achieve that!

Here is an example of falling in love with a piece of fabric over a year and a half ago and I am just now doing something with it. Love the solids!

How do you feel about using solids in your quilts? Love them? So-so? Not your style?Helenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04628018767495612691noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119613608660235057.post-27135054344091932052012-08-02T10:05:00.003-07:002012-08-02T10:14:34.577-07:00DECO SHIMMER

Thank you to everyone for your encouraging words. It is motivating to know what people think about the things I do.

I finished the full Deco Shimmer quilt. It is 53x53 and I used the Adorn It line of fabrics. I had bought 8 Adorn It fat quarters on vacation in Utah this summer when Jenny and I had 5 minutes at the quilt shop before it closed. I knew the yellow and gray would go perfectly with the decor in our new house and I added the blue binding to give it just a splash of color contrast. I quilted curved cross hatching in the outer layer of each block mimicking the curves the Quick Curve Ruler ruler created. Yes, the pebbling made me a little crazy by the end, but the ribbons broke up the monotony and gives it great eye candy. I love how it turned out!!! I will have the pattern available soon.
